LGBT People

The lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people that we profile on the site include:

Of course, many people wear wear more than one hat. Most LGBT political figures were activists before they held public office, and almost everyone we’ve profiled could be considered an activist simply for being public about being L, G, B, or T. Some political figures like Harvey Milk and Mark Leno were owners of small businesses before holding elected office, but we’re listed them just under political figures. For writers, it can  sometimes be challenging to decide whether they belong under Academics or Entertainers (and we ultimately had to decide that on a case-by-case basis).

Political Figures generally only include those who’ve held elected office (even if they were only appointed to that office). We’ve kept those appointed to city commissions and the like under Activists. The exception are those who’ve served as U.S. Ambassadors; for some reason, it felt overly partisan to keep them under Activists.

To keep it simple, we’ve placed each person on just one of these pages even though many could easily appear on two or three of them.

The people profiled here include anyone who has merited being tagged in a blog post (which means these lists will continue to grow). For the most part, almost all have a San Francisco connection, though for some it may simply be a memorial or monument to them here.
