Bathhouses and Beyond

Crowded Gay BarToday’s Queerty has a brief history of gay hookups, from bathhouses to bars to hookup sites and now hookup apps.

It’s just a quick overview and much is missing. What about cruising in parks and down by the piers? North Beach became San Francisco’s first gay neighborhood precisely because homosexuals would loiter near the docks hoping for a quickie with a sailor. And toilet stall toe tapping didn’t originate with Larry Craig.

From the article:

“On February 21, 1903, NYPD conducted the first recorded raid on a gay bathhouse in the basement of the Ariston Hotel at the corner Broadway and 55th Street in New York City. 26 men were arrested and 12 brought to trial on sodomy charges.”

There are more historical nuggets in the article, albeit with a New York focus.
