This week in SF Gay History: January 19 – 25

Sports Illustrated’s photo in Hi Tops helped make the gay sports bar nationally famous just a weeks after they opened.

January 25, 1882

On this date in 1882, author Virginia Woolf (Mrs Dalloway; Orlando), considered one of the foremost modernist writers of the twentieth century, was born in London. Mrs. Woolf is one of the inaugural honorees on the Rainbow Honor Walk in the Castro.

January 20, 2013

On this date in 2013, Sports Illustrated ran a photo of two men kissing at Hi Tops when the 49ers won the NFC National Championship, clinching a spot at Super Bowl XLVII. The photo helped make the new Castro gay sports bar — which had just opened in early December — nationally famous.

January 21, 2014

On this date in 2014, Armistead Maupin published The Days of Anna Madrigal, the ninth and final book in the Tales of the City series.
