New Feature: This Day in SF Gay History

We’re excited to announce the launch of a new feature on the site: This Day in History.

If you scroll down the page, on the right column below the first set of ads you’ll see a section called This Day in History. It will show any milestone we’ve added for the day you happen to be looking. If we don’t have any dates listed for the calendar day you’re looking, it will say No Events.

You can also check our Timeline for a calendar listing of the Current Month and from that navigate to any other month you want to check out.

Although there are a few issues of general non-gay San Francisco interest (such as the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge) and others of national LGBTQ interest (such as the Stonewall Riots and important Supreme Court rulings), we’ve tried to keep the focus on historical tidbits that are specifically both LGBTQ-related and related to the San Francisco Bay Area.

Many are dates we uncovered through research for other articles on the site, or for the pre-existing Timeline we did. Others were things we went and looked up, like the birthdays, dates of death, and major milestones for local LGBTQ politicians and other celebrities. Some we stumbled across and jotted down. Others were from weird flashes of inspiration. (“I wonder if that streaker at the Oscars had a gay connection and a San Francisco connection?” — turns out he had both!)

We have lots of milestones where we know the year, and sometimes the month, but not the exact date. For this feature, we need all three: month, day, and year.

We’d love your help in fleshing this out. Although we’ve added 415 dates at this moment, many of them double up on dates where something else was already listed, leaving too many dates with No Events.

Of particular interest:

  • The dates of birth and death of noteworthy LGBTQ individuals with a San Francisco connection
  • Political milestones, especially “firsts,” such as elections, political appointments, and the signing or vetoing of significant LGBTQ legislation
  • Legal milestones such as the dates of important court rulings or the appointments of LGBTQ judges, especially “firsts” in their areas
  • Nightlife-related events, such as the opening and closing of important LGBTQ bars and venues, first performances of historically important figures or events, or significant police raids
  • Other LGBTQ milestones related to the San Francisco Bay Area where you have a month, day, and year for the events

If you have a milestone you’d like to recommend adding (or a correction for a mistake we’ve made), please use the “This Day in History Change” pulldown on our Contact Us form to let us know. (If you don’t hear back from us soon, there might be a problem — the form seems glitchy at times — so you can also always leave a comment on this post.)
